This historic ukulele was made in the mid 1880's by famed luthier Augusto Dias; Dias came to Hawaii from Madeira on the Ravenscrag in August of 1879 along with Jose do Esprito Santos and Manuel Nunes. All three were cabinet makers but were contracted to work on the sugar plantations and after they fulfilled their contracts all three settled down in Honolulu and were instrumental in the introduction of a new instrument they all had a part in inventing called the ukulele.
